Gerald describes his work and his inspirations….

“My paintings are non-objective acrylics. They are designed to give a sense of vital yet disciplined energy in a whole that imparts a mood of calm contemplation. They are essentially formal constructions, in which space is deployed and controlled by a carefully refined line……”

“I am indebted to the influence of such artists as Mondrian, Mark Rothko and Morris Louis….”

“I relate my work to the early tradition of Irish and Anglo-Saxon painting, c. 8th Century, as seen in the sophisticated abstract designs of e.g. the Book of Kells, and the Lindisfarne Gospels. Drawn with a pen on a near-white ground (vellum), they reveal the special power that line exerts, both in itself and in composing and controlling space. I have taken inspiration from these masterpieces of Western art”
